Description
Pure Veteran Pellets are the ideal choice for older horses who need a mash but with all the benefits of a traditional feed mix. These pellets offer the same high nutritional value, but in a more convenient, easy-to-feed form - perfect for fussy eaters. Formulated with higher levels of vitamins and minerals to support aging digestive systems, Pure Veteran Pellets help counteract reduced nutrient absorption in senior horses. They contain slow-release calories to maintain condition, while easily digestible protein supports muscle tone and topline.
Low in sugar and starch, Pure Veteran Pellets are suitable for horses with metabolic issues like laminitis. Simply soak the pellets with two parts water to one part feed until a soft mash forms - ready in 15 minutes, or are even fluffier after an hour.
Feeding rate:
400-600g per 100kg body weight per day depending on condition and work done.
Supplied in a 15kg bag.

Convenient, Complete Nutrition in Every Pellet
As horses age, their digestive efficiency decreases, making it harder for them to absorb essential nutrients. Pure Veteran Pellets are specifically formulated to address these challenges, packing all the goodness of slow-release calories, high-quality protein, and elevated vitamins and minerals into a convenient pelleted form. These pellets support muscle tone, topline, and overall condition, making it easier to maintain weight. Ideal for older horses with dental issues, the pellets can be soaked into a soft mash, ensuring they can comfortably eat.

⚡ Does your horse need slow-release or fast-release energy? 🐎
Not all energy in horse feed behaves the same way, and it can make a big difference to how your horse feels and performs.
Feeds high in starch and sugar can provide quick-release energy. For some horses, that can mean extra sparkle you weren’t quite asking for.
Energy from fibre and oil, on the other hand, is released more slowly. That means steady stamina, better focus and controlled energy, ideal for horses in work without the unwanted fizz.
At Pure Feed, our complete feeds are built around fibre-based, slow-release energy, so you can fuel performance while helping keep your horse balanced and rideable.

Your horse’s gut does a lot more than just “digest feed” ➡️ it’s responsible for nutrient absorption, immune support, behaviour, condition, performance… everything starts there.
The horse’s digestive system is designed for a near-constant intake of fibre, with fermentation in the hindgut supplying a significant proportion of their energy. When diets are high in starch or contain unnecessary additives, we can disrupt that delicate microbial balance and that’s when we start to see issues with condition, behaviour and consistency.
At Pure Feed, every formulation is built around supporting optimal digestive function. Our feeds are:
• Molasses free
• Cereal free (bar our Pure Performance)
• Alfalfa free
• Mould inhibitor free
Instead of relying on cereals for energy, we use highly digestible fibre sources and oil to provide slow-release energy that works in harmony with the hindgut. Each feed is fully balanced with vitamins and minerals, so you’re not layering multiple products on top.
The result? A more stable energy profile, efficient nutrient utilisation, and support for the microbiome. All from a feeding system designed to reflect how horses are meant to eat.

Many horse owners focus on feed labels and see “<10% sugar + starch” and assume it’s automatically safe for any horse. But the truth is, percentage values alone don’t give the full picture. What really matters is the actual grams of sugar and starch a horse consumes per meal relative to their bodyweight.
Here’s an example:
Feed A: 10% sugar + starch, fed at 500g → 50g sugar + starch
Feed B: 10% sugar + starch, fed at 2kg → 200g sugar + starch
Even though both feeds have the same percentage, Feed B delivers four times more sugar and starch in one meal. That’s a huge difference for your horse’s digestion, energy levels, and risk of conditions like laminitis or colic.
Breaking feed into smaller, more frequent meals keeps sugar and starch intake lower at any one time, supporting stable energy levels and better digestive health. Nutritionists always calculate sugar and starch per kg of bodyweight per meal, not just per day, and consider the whole diet, including forage, treats, and grazing.

With the event season starting soon, many horses’ work has started increasing, but have you thought about how your feeding can limit your horse’s performance? Here’s what to watch out for:
❌ Too much cereal → spikes blood sugar, increases excitability, and stresses digestion
❌ Too little fibre → reduces chewing time, gut motility, and microbiome health
❌ Imbalanced protein / amino acids → slows muscle repair and topline growth
✅ Science-backed feeding fixes:
• Balanced calories for energy without fizz
• Fibre to support gut health and slow-release energy
• Correct amino acids for muscle repair and strength

We’re increasingly choosing less processed food for ourselves because we understand how additives can impact our digestive system and overall well-being. The same principle applies to our horses.
That’s why Pure Feed is mould inhibitor free.
Instead of relying on chemical preservatives, we prioritise ingredient quality, controlled storage, and specially produced porous bags to maintain freshness and nutritional integrity. This helps support the hindgut environment and avoids unnecessary exposure to additives that can disrupt the delicate balance of the equine microbiome.

🌾 Did you know our complete feeds contain grass chaff?
It’s not just there for bulk, it’s science-backed fibre that actively supports your horse’s digestive:
🧪 Digestible fibre (NDF) keeps the gut moving efficiently, supporting normal hindgut function.
🧬 Encourages chewing and saliva production, which helps buffer stomach acid and protect the stomach lining.
🦠 Fuels the hindgut microbiome, feeding beneficial bacteria for better fermentation and nutrient absorption.
Including grass chaff means your horse gets consistent, functional fibre every day, even when hay quality or availability varies.

What’s really happening inside your horse after exercise?
Work doesn’t just burn energy. It causes
👉 electrolyte loss through sweat
👉 oxidative stress in muscle cells
👉 micro-damage to muscle fibres that must be repaired
That’s why post-exercise recovery nutrition matters 👇
⚡ Electrolytes
Sweat removes sodium, potassium and chloride. Replacing them supports hydration, muscle contraction and nerve signalling; essential for proper recovery.
🧬 Antioxidants
Exercise increases free radicals. Antioxidants help neutralise these, supporting muscles and reducing post-work fatigue.
💪 Limiting amino acids
These are the critical building blocks for muscle repair. Without them, recovery and muscle adaptation are compromised, even if protein intake looks “adequate”.
What you feed after work influences how your horse feels tomorrow, next week and next season.

FAQs
All of our feeds, except Pure Performance, are suitable for laminitics. These feeds are formulated with low sugar and starch levels, which are crucial in managing laminitis. High sugar and starch intake can cause insulin spikes, leading to increased laminitic risk. Let’s take a look at each of our products from the complete range that is safe for laminitic horses:
Our Pure Balance, Pure Fibre Balance and Pure Easy are all suitable to feed to a horse or pony that may have previously had laminitis, or horses that have other conditions that require them to have a low sugar and starch diet. They are all fibre based and contain no molasses or wholegrain cereals. The combined sugar and starch level is 10% or less in these feeds, apart from our Pure Balance. Our Pure Balance has a slightly higher combined sugar and starch content, however it has a much smaller feeding rate so still only provides a small amount. They are all low calorie and will ensure that your horse is getting all the essential daily nutrients that they require, including vitamins and minerals. This is especially important for horses that have a history of laminitis for example and who may be on a restricted diet. Our Pure Working also has a combined sugar and starch level of 10%. The higher oil content of the Pure Working makes it suitable to feed to a horse that needs a low starch diet, due to laminitis for example, but that is also underweight and needs to gain some condition. Using oil in the feed helps to provide the horse with extra calories, in a safe way. Our Veteran range consists of our Pure Veteran Mix and Pure Veteran Pellets. Both of these feeds are suitable to feed to older horses that have previously had laminitis or other similar conditions that require them to have a low sugar and starch diet.
Pure Veteran Pellets are suitable for horses with dental issues or difficulty chewing. The pellets can be easily soaked to form a soft mash, making them much easier to eat for horses with compromised teeth. The formula is high in fibre, which is beneficial for digestion and maintaining a healthy gut, and is also low in sugar and starch, making it a safe option for older horses or those with specific dietary needs.
Easy to chew, easy to love. Shop Pure Veteran Pellets today for gentle veteran feeding.
Yes, all of our complete feeds are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals; they contain a balancer, gut balancer, biotin, and salt. This means that each of our complete feeds provides everything your horse needs in just one bag. The inclusion of these key ingredients ensures your horse receives balanced nutrition for overall health, hoof support, digestive function, and electrolyte balance, all in a single, easy-to-feed product.
For horses that tie up, any of our feeds are suitable, except for Pure Performance. We recommend feeding Pure Refuel alongside the base feed to provide additional support, including electrolytes, selenium, and other important nutrients that aid in muscle function and recovery. This combination helps to replenish what’s lost during exercise, promoting optimal muscle health and reducing the risk of tying up
Support muscle health and hydration. Shop Pure ReFuel today for low-starch, high-fibre nutrition with balanced electrolytes to prevent tying up and promote recovery.
Yes, we recommend soaking Pure Veteran Pellets to create a soft, palatable mash, especially for older horses with dental issues or difficulty chewing. Soaking also enhances digestibility and hydration.
While Pure Veteran Pellets don’t include any specific ingredients for joint support, they are pack full of omega 3 fatty acids, and anti-oxidants, both of which help support senior horses maintain comfort and movement!
